Bend Oregon

Bend, Oregon is the largest city in Central Oregon and the county seat of Deschutes County. Located along the Deschutes River and just east of the Cascade Range, the city sits at an elevation of roughly 3,600 feet and blends high‑desert landscapes with mountain scenery. Originally known as a fordable crossing called “Farewell Bend,” the area was incorporated as a city in 1905 and grew from a small settlement into a regional hub.

Historically, Bend developed as a logging town, with major sawmills and timber operations driving its early economy. By the mid‑20th century, declining timber resources led to economic shifts, but the city reinvented itself as a recreation‑focused destination. Today, Bend is bordered by the Deschutes National Forest and surrounded by lakes, lava fields, caves, and mountain resorts, making it a gateway for outdoor exploration.

Modern Bend is known for its rapid growth, vibrant culture, and strong tourism economy. Visitors and residents enjoy activities such as mountain biking, hiking, skiing, fishing, rafting, and rock climbing, as well as a thriving craft‑beer scene and local arts community. With a 2020 population of 99,178 and a metro population exceeding 247,000, Bend is one of Oregon’s fastest‑growing regions and a popular place to live, work, and play.
